Travel in this modern age is easier, but at the same time more complicated than it has ever been. There are more choices for the traveler; but long lines at airports, increased customs scrutiny of travelers, and the world political situation can the modern vacationer pause.

Last September, we discovered our new favorite way to travel: The River Cruise. We had spent two weeks in Italy, on our own, then flew to Lisbon, Portugal. We met up with a group from the Long Beach Yacht Club (Hello Anglers!), and began our river cruise from the city of Porto. We meandered up the Douro River, eventually ending up in Spain, and turning back down the river to return to Porto.

We've been on cruise ships multiple times, but they have always been the large, ocean going cruise ships. The river cruise boat was small (only about 110 cabins), the service was excellent, and there were daily side trips to see local attractions. (And LOTS of port wine!)

However, after the tours and guides and daily rush of our vacation in Italy, the peace and quiet of the river cruise ship was refreshing. Sitting atop the river boat in a lounge chair, enjoying the peace and quite, gazing out at vineyards that date back to Roman times, well, it was just wonderful.
