As far as color is concerned, the darker shades are to be recommended for general use, in view of the fact that a rug must undergo a certain amount of rough usage, and that the light colors soon are ruined by dirt and dust. In a bedroom, lighter shades would be more proper than in the more public rooms of the household, as the wear is naturally less. In all our rooms, however, rugs must endure a degree of ill-treatment unknown in Asia, for in nearly all the Orient it is customary to remove one's shoes on entering a house. It is this custom that has preserved to us antique Oriental rugs that would long ago have perished under Western living conditions.
