It is only possible to vise tile floors in localities where the climate so permits. In the northern portions of this country floors may be in either random width oak or walnut boards or in one of the various patented composition materials that imitate tile and stone, but which are not so cold to the touch. The cork and rubber compounds come in a variety of colors and finishes and are excellent substitutes for the harder substances. Oriental rugs are usually used with restraint.
The decorative arts of Spain and Italy, which were so foreign to this country only a few years ago, have in the last decade taken such a hold upon sections of the South and West, that the styles, due to their great suitability to those parts, has almost the appearance of a mature expression, and indeed it has been found with the introduction of slight variations to so satisfactorily fit modern convenience and requirements, that more need not be said as to the advantages of using these styles in the sections of the country that correspond to the climate of southern Spain. The only warning necessary is that their great popularity may, through the activity of inefficient designers with an inadequate comprehension of their limit, cause possibly a surfeit and confusion which may lead to their decline.
