Stress and Headaches

No matter how sophisticated science and technology becomes, everyone will suffer from the stresses of daily life. However, if a vaccine existed that would grant protection from the effects of stress and headaches, it would be an instant best-seller.
But, as much as we want to be free from stress and headaches, we can never get immunity from its effects. Unlike other infections for which we can develop an immunity, stress does not work that way. Stress can often be linked to headaches, although not all headaches are caused by stress. Stress however, is a known trigger.
Headaches Linked To Stress
There are two main forms of headache which are linked to stress:
- Migraine Headaches: According to the National Headache Foundation migraines are thought to be triggered by a combination of factors, stress being one of them. However, they point out that stress alone doesn’t seem to cause migraines. Migraines are debilitating and can last from several hours to several days. As well as severe headaches, sufferers may feel nauseous and have a sensitivity to light.
- Tension Headaches: These are commonly known as stress headaches. This is the kind of headache that is directly caused by stress. They only occur when stress is present, may it be physical, mental or emotional stress. It is believed that approximately one-third of all adults experience this type of stress and headache phenomenon. While the signs and symptoms associated with this type of headache are not as debilitating as migraine headaches, they can still cause distress to those experiencing them.
Stress and headaches are a fairly common partnership in people of all ages. Stress headaches can be avoided by employing good stress management techniques. These are generally changes in lifestyle and diet, rather than long term medication. Medical treatment is sometimes necessary to give relief to the headache symptoms brought on by stress.
