How Stress Affects Health
| By Lee Mayer | Category: Physical Effects of Stress
Stress is a very common problem, not only in the USA, but literally worldwide. It also shows no gender or even age preference. Stress affects us all in our daily lives and is generally unavoidable. How stress affects our health is simply to what degree we are surrounded by stressors.
4 Ways Stress Affects Health
When stress and health interact, there are many aspects of one’s life that may be effected:
Physical Health: Stress on our health, when unmanaged, can be physically damaging. Stress increases our blood pressure, lessens blood flow to vital body organs and leads to muscle pains especially at the back due to tension. When this persists, damage to the body’s organs can occur and chronic pain may result.
Mental Health: Stress has a large effect on our mental health. When we are stressed we may feel depressed and lose the will to perform our usual routines. Too much stress can also affect how we perceive things as we start to lose focus.
Social Health: When feeling stressed we have a tendency to perform poorly at work or just feel burned out. As such, we may suffer from absenteeism when we get to the point that we simply cannot go to work. This can impact on our financial situation – causing further stress. With regard to family, too much stress on one person can damage everyone in the household. Couples may reach a breaking point and ultimately divorce when stress reaches its peak without proper stress management.
Emotional Health: Anxiety and frequent emotional outbursts may be an effect of stress on our emotional health when chronically unmanaged.
Stress and health are two very important facets of our life. Managing one well means the proper functioning of the other.
