ATTIC REMODELING IS NOT DIFFICULT

For the most part, attic remodeling is simply a matter of careful planning and elementary carpentry work, all of which can be accomplished by any homeowner without trouble or worry. It's just a case of following certain procedures as outlined in this and later chapters.

The only exception to the foregoing statement occurs when it is necessary or desirable to erect a shed-type dormer in order to provide more light, better ventilation and additional horizontal ceiling area. Even then, serious problems need not be anticipated.

Planning

For the most part, including projects where dormers are involved, the planning is not difficult because no strength-of-material or other engineering problems need be dealt with. The limits of such projects are prescribed by the exterior walls and roofs of houses and all planning is confined to the use of simple walls and space-dividing partitions which can be safely supported by existing structural details. Planning is important and it should be given the most careful attention. But, there is nothing difficult in planning an attic-remodeling project.

Doing the work

As previously mentioned, most of the actual remodeling work consists of elementary carpentry. Any and all such work can be accomplished with such simple hand tools as hammers, saws, levels, plumb bobs and squares. The design of all structural details is explained by means of illustrative examples which include any phase of such design that you may encounter. Actually, all of the carpentry work involved in attic remodeling consists of merely cutting and fitting various materials and then fastening them in place.

The building laws in most cities specify that all electrical and plumbing work shall be done by licensed master mechanics. Thus, you need not be worried about such aspects of remodeling.
