How To Remodel Basements And Attics

Now becoming popular is the smaller tile court and new shuffleboard equipment, only two thirds regulation size. The disks, for example, are only 4 in. in diameter instead of 6 in. This makes it possible to scale down the entire court without scaling down any of the fun. The recommended length of the scaled-down court is 29 ft. 3 in. (center diagram, in Fig. 5), but it can be made as short as 25 ft. 6 in. by decreasing the area between the "dead lines." The regulation court is shown in the top diagram.

Billiard and pool tables

The size of one standard billiard table and the clearance necessary between it and walls is shown in Fig. 6. Smaller tables such as 5 ft. 3 in. by 9 ft. 5 in. and 4 ft. 11 in. by 8 ft. 9 in. are also available. In any case, it is necessary to study your basement to see if there is space that can be used in this way.

MODERN LAUNDRY

If you want a modern laundry, there are two items you must keep in mind: The space requirements and the location of existing water, sewer and vent pipes. Fig. 7 shows old-fashioned laundry equipment in an unfinished basement. Fig. 8 shows the same corner of the remodeled basement with modern equipment installed. If you can visit a dealer's showroom and measure the widths and lengths of the new equipment, the space requirements can be estimated. Note that the equipment shown in Fig. 8 is the same as shown in the upper part of Fig. 1.

In order to keep remodeling costs at a reasonable level, it is necessary to locate new laundry equipment where the washer can be connected to the existing plumbing system.

Any other ideas for basement remodeling can be studied as in the foregoing discussion. First, decide exactly what the purpose of your remodeling is and then check your basement to see if the space, location of plumbing pipes, furnace location, etc., are such that the remodeling can be accomplished. This constitutes the first step of planning. Once you have this step completed, and once you know your remodeling purpose can be accomplished, the more exact phases of planning can be started.
