How To Remodel Basements And Attics

Next, he spread adhesive over the border area but was careful not to cover the very ends or corners of the layout. When the adhesive became tacky, he used the exposed line ends or corners as a guide to snap chalk lines on the adhesive to represent all of the lines mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Mr. Jones laid the border tile starting with tile 1 at the GB corner. See Fig. 11. Next he laid the tile up to FA, then from GB to HC, from HC to JD and finally to KE. When laying each piece of tile, he held the edge of the piece in his hands firmly against the adjacent piece and then lowered the tile in his hands. He was careful not to slide the tile into position.

Next, and as before, the guide lines shown at L and M were drawn on the floor with chalk. Then guide lines at R. The same procedure was followed to lay those lines of tile. These guide lines made it possible for Mr. Jones to apply adhesive and lay the tile in the areas marked X, Y, Z, U, W and Q.

Finally the guide lines marked M and N were established and the same procedure followed to lay the balance of the floor.

When tiles had to be cut, such as at JD, Mr. Jones heated them with a blowtorch until they were hot, but not too hot to handle. At that temperature he could cut and form them with a special knife he obtained where he bought the tile.

BALANCE OF WORK

Mr. Jones completed the balance of the remodeling work as time and the family budget allowed. With the major part of the remodeling, steps 1 through 28, completed, the recreation room was usable even before the painting of siding, trim, filled-in beam, trees, stairs, fences, storage seat, etc., was started.
