How To Do The Remodeling
CARRYING ON the illustrative example started in Chapter 9, we can assume that the Mr. Jones and his family have prepared the final plan view of their remodeling project, as explained in Chapter 9, and that they have completed their cost estimate, as explained in Chapter 10. Now, they are ready to plan and do the actual remodeling work.
At this point in our discussion of basement remodeling, we want to again emphasize the great benefits of complete planning and estimating prior to the time you order materials or start the structural and installation work. If you have planned carefully and completely, and if you have checked and made accurate cost estimates, you can be sure that your project will be successful. Otherwise, every dollar you spend may be a gamble.
Planning the actual remodeling work consists of dividing the whole project into progressive steps so that everything is done in proper sequence, so far as construction is concerned, and so that materials can be purchased as your financial budget allows.
PROGRESSIVE STEPS FOR REMODELING
Due to the fact that Mr. Jones made a careful and complete estimate of all necessary materials (see Chapter 10), he knew the kinds and sizes of all the materials. In this chapter we shall assume such data.
After consulting a professional mechanic, in connection with logical construction procedures, Mr. Jones prepared the following list of progressive steps for the construction and installation work. This plan allows the purchase of materials as they are needed and as they can be used. It also allows a planned expenditure of money.
Note: See Fig. 1. This illustration shows the same information as Fig. 1 in Chapter 10.
Step 1. Partition layout
After moving everything away from the space to be remodeled and then cleaning the concrete floor, Mr. Jones purchased a 50-ft. measuring tape, a long and straight piece of 1 x 3-in. stock and some chalk. He then measured and marked the locations of all partitions using the following procedure.
