How To Remodel Basements And Attics

Fig. 2 shows the same basement after a rather ambitious remodeling plan was completed. As that remodeling plan stands, without careful thought having been given to probable cost, it seems well-designed and certainly desirable. The following items constitute some of the changes and innovations.

1. Every square foot of the basement area has been put to good use. There is no wasted space.
2. A new, forced-air heating plant is specified. This eliminates the large supply and return ducts that were necessary for the old gravity furnace. The new forced-air ducts require little room and can be installed between joists or otherwise out of the way.

3. The old lavatory area is to be enlarged to powder-room size and includes a wash basin with the water closet relocated. The enlarged area will be more useful and convenient.
4. Ample storage space has been provided.
5. The new heating plant will put an end to dust and dirt.
6. The new laundry equipment is conveniently grouped near the lothes chute. Such a laundry will greatly reduce the housewife's work.
7. The laundry and storage areas are to have asphalt tile floors and painted walls.
8. A spacious (20 x 11 ft.) recreation room has been planned. A room that size can be used for games, entertaining and practically any other purpose a living area could be used for.
9. New stairs are specified.
10. A spacious hall separates the recreation room from the utility area and leads to the stairs and other parts of the basement.
11. A fireplace is specified for the recreation room.
12. Two new double-hung windows are specified.
13. The hot-water tank is to be moved to the utility area.
14. Oak flooring is to be used in the recreation room.
15. The water and gas meters are to be moved away from the recreation room area.
16. The laundry tubs must be moved.
17. The position of the water closet must be changed.
18. The walls in the recreation room are to be surfaced with plank on furring. The ceilings are to be covered with acoustical tile.
