Wall Brushes, Metal-bound. Fig. 1.1. As the name implies these brushes are used for spreading paint on walls, and are made of Chinese bristle, vulcanized in rubber. The brushes are made in a range of sizes, but the preferred size is 4" wide, length of bristles 4%".
Woodwork Brushes, Paint and Varnish. Fig. 1.2. These brushes are made of Chinese bristle 1" to 3" wide, vulcanized in rubber. The size used depends on the work to be done. For "cutting" around glass in doors and windows, the 1" or 2" brush may be used. For painting doors and trim the 3" brush is preferred.
These brushes are used for caldmining ceilings and applying cold water paints, and are made of black China or gray Russian bristle. The Russian bristle is considered better than theChinese, as the bristle is heavier, and therefore does not become flabby in water as the finer Chinese bristle is likely to do. They come bound with galvanized ferrule in sizes 6" to 8" wide. However, the preferred size is 7" wide, length of bristle 53/4".
Whitewash Brushes. Fig. 1.4. These brushes are made of stiff white fiber, 7" wide, with a 31/2 bristle length. Do not use a good calcimine brush for whitewash, because the caustic action of the whitewash will ruin the fine bristles of a calcimine brush.
