Color Transparency. When pigments are used in making stains (Chap- ter 7) they should be transparent to light, since stains are generally used where the grain of the wood is to show through the finish. In choosing pigments for use in stains, in accordance with the formulas given in Chapter 7, select them on the basis of their transparency. They are commonly classified as transparent and semitransparent as follows:

TRANSPARENTSEMI-TRANSPARENT
All lake and aniline colors
Prussian blue
Cobalt blue
Ultramarine blue
Raw sienna
Burnt sienna
Tuscan red
Raw umber

Color Mixing. As stated at the beginning of the chapter, the mixing of pigments is discussed so that a pigment of any desired hue can be produced for use in mixing paint of that hue, as explained in Chapters 5 and 6. The formulas developed in this section refer to pure pigments, consisting only of the dry pigment ground in linseed oil, and thus in paste form. (To avoid confusion, it is well to recall the definitions given in Chapter 1, where it was explained that a pigment is a material, white or colored, used to give body, covering power, and color to a paint. Paint, on the other hand, is a mixture of pigment, vehicle, thinner, and drier ready to apply.) Before proceeding to give the formulas for mixing pigments, certain general principles will be pointed out which must be observed to obtain the best results.
