Painting And Decorating

The ladder should be placed flat on the ground. One person should be stationed at the lower or ground end of the ladder, placing the toes againstthe side rails in order to keep the ladder from slipping when the upper nd is being raised. Then grip, with both hands, the rung easiest to reach and hold it firmly. The second person should be stationed at the upper end (the part that will rest against the building) of the ladder. Taking the last rung with both hands, lift the ladder. Both must now work together. As the second person moves from rung to rung in the direction of the lower end of the ladder, the person stationed there will aid in lifting by pulling on the ladder. When the ladder is in a vertical position it is easy to move it from place to place.

The only caution that is necessary is that of keeping the ladder from tilting forward or backward. Keep it as much as possible in a plumb or vertical position when moving about.

The procedure in lowering differs only in one respect. The person at the upper end will move from the middle toward the upper part. The first person follows the exact procedure as in raising the ladder.

Skillful choice of color is one of the most important requirements in paint- ing and decoration. Every finished job will appear at its best only if its colors harmonize, not only with each other, but with their surroundings. The selection of color is not so difficult in exterior painting, where our range of colors is limited by custom and by the action of sun and weather, which fade many of the more delicate hues, but in interior painting and decoration we can, and do, use a great number of colors, tints, and shades. Thus, we must be able to tell in advance that the colors of our walls, ceiling, and woodwork will harmonize with the furniture, rugs, hangings, etc., so that the entire room will appear at its best.
This chapter explains in full detail a practical method of color selection, and then it gives a large number of color combinations and color schemes. There is a wide variety of complete plans for each room in the house, specify- ing the colors of every detail. These plans can readily be adapted to any specific requirements. They have been worked out, simply and directly, from the basic principles of color.
