| By | Category: Debating Skills

Learning how to debate will increase your confidence in all your endeavors, whether business or personal. You will feel confident expressing your opinions without feeling uncomfortable when someone challenges you. Your opponent may not end up agreeing with you but they may walk away with respect for your ability to articulate why you believe what you do.

A debate is, in its simplest form, a reasoned argument for and against a proposition. This argument follows a certain set of rules to allow each side to present its position in a structured and disciplined way. There are many styles of debates which are endorsed by various organizations and different rules may apply.

Most debates follow this formula:

  1. A topic is chosen
  2. The topic is defined to ensure that all parties understand it
  3. The roles of the speakers are defined
  4. Each team presents their argument
  5. Each team offers a rebuttal

Here are a few situations to avoid when debating:

  • Using emotionally charged words
  • Innuendo – don’t use insinuation to attack your opponent
  • Mistaking opinion for facts

How To Debate Tips

There are some key points to consider in any debate:

    • Research your point before pleading your case.
    • Think like your “opponent”. If you can anticipate their objections, then you’ll know how to rebut them.
    • A successful debate follows a specific pattern: introduction, evidence, and a conclusion. Your introduction doesn’t have to be long or formal. Follow it up with 2 or 3 solid facts that support your position. Then the conclusion just recaps everything and ends on a positive note.

You do not need to participate in formal debates to benefit from learning how to debate. These critical thinking and strategic debate skills will improve your ability to communicate, persuade, and influence others.
