The question of using an overlapping or butt seam is a matter for individual consideration but if the overlapping seam is pasted on it will still be necessary to have the paper trimmed at one side.
Decorative borders are purchased by the yard and these are obtainable in a very wide range of pattern and colours. In most cases a border of a particular pattern or colour is made specially to go with a particular kind of wallpaper and a sample book may be consulted at the showrooms of the local supplier.
As a general rule it is advisable to purchase the full quantity of paper required at one time and it is not a good thing to purchase odd rolls as they are required. The manufacturers of wallpapers take all possible precautions to avoid printing papers or the same pattern in different colours but there is a possibility that in different batches there may be slight varieties of colour.
Paper Hanging
WHEN all the preliminaries have been carried out, the walls of the room prepared and the equipment and tools assembled and the paste made, the work of pasting and hanging the paper may be commenced. With most kinds of wall-paper it will be found advisable to paste more than one roll at a time and each roll is folded as it is pasted as described later in the instructions. This pasting of several strips allows the adhesive to soak to the paper, thus making it easier to hang, and also grouping of the work into a definite series of actions is economical in time and labour and lends itself to greater accuracy.
It will be found tedious to cut one strip of paper at a time then paste it and hang it. It will be found best to cut several strips. In most cases a complete roll can be cut intostrips before the pasting is started. The roll of paper should be held at the picture rail or to the ceiling with one end unrolled until the end of the paper touches the top of the skirting board. A mark should be lightly made to indicate the top edge of the strip and to this 4 or 6 ins. should be added for trimming. With one piece cut to length it will be found an easy matter to use this strip for measuring other lengths.
The strips of paper should be placed with the pattern side down on the working table. The front edge of the top- most sheet of paper should be actually level with the front edge of the table or paste boards. The other strips of paper should be arranged at the back of the table with the edges overlapping slightly as illustrated in Fig. 18.
