Distemper may be used with wallpaper to obtain some particularly attractive finished effects in rooms that are suited to this form of decoration.
One of the modern aids to good home decorating, especially made for amateur use, is a roller and this may be used for painting or distempering large areas There are several kinds of rollers which are very similar in design and use. The roller consists of sheepskin-covered roll which is supported by an axle pinned to a handle at one side so that the roller freely revolves when drawn over the decorating surface. A tray is supplied with the roller and a small amount of the decorating material, distemper or paint, is placed in the tray. The roller is then dipped into the decorating material and rolled on the sloping base ot the tray and completely coated with paint or distemper. With this done the roller is used on the surface. Very little practice is required to become efficient with a roller and in many ways it is considered better than brushes for use by the amateur.
Alter distempering any unused material should be poured back into its container and the lid tightly fastened. All tools used, brushes and rollers should be thoroughly washed be- lore putting them away in storage until they are required again.

So many are the varieties of paints produced today by manufacturers of good standing that the amateur does not need to acquire any knowledge of mixing paints, and paints ot guaranteed quality are available lor specific purposes. It should be appreciated that there is no single kind of paint that can be used universally for all surfaces and it is advisable to consult colour cards and catalogues of paint manufacturers to ensure that the correct paint for the particular purpose is obtained.
