How To Design And Install Plumbing

Fig. 90 illustrates a roof terminal commonly used today. It consists of a cast-iron body into which a screw thread galvanized pipe can be inserted as a means of connecting it to a cast-iron or galvanized steel roof leader.

Roof drains are provided with a copper flashing or, in some instances, with a cast-iron clamp ring so the joint between the roof and the conductor may be water-tight. A cast-iron strainer basket is attached to the drain to prevent stones, leaves, and other materials from entering the conductor.

A roof leader may be terminated by placing the hub of a cast-iron soil pipe flush with the roof, as shown in Fig. 90. A piece of sheet lead 2 feet long by 2 feet wide may be laid on the roof and dressed into the soil pipe hub. A small sleeve about 2 inches long, cut from a cast-iron pipe, must be calked into the hub to make the connection watertight. It is inadvisable to nail the sheet lead flashing to the roof. A wire mesh strainer may be inserted in the hub to prevent the entrance of foreign materials.

Sizing the Roof Leader. The same problems which make sizing the storm drain a difficult task are involved in determining roof leader size. Therefore the mechanic must use available data.

Should the mechanic wish to use the formulas which were presented earlier in the chapter under the heading "Sizing the Storm Drain" he may do so. The final conclusions are practically identical with the table. The number of square feet of roof which can be drained by 1 square inch of pipe can be increased to 350 square feet, because of the vertical position of the roof leader.

Soil Pipe

The soil pipe is that portion of the plumbing system which receives the discharge of water closets, with or without additional fixtures, and conveys the wastes to the house drain, Fig. 91.
