How To Design And Install Plumbing

books

After the main run has been completed the branch can be installed.

The branches should be run at right angles to the main and must be as direct and free from diagonal offsets as is practical. The changes of direction should consist of Y fittings and 1/8 bends laid on their sides to assure long radius turns. As illustrated in Fig. 55, branch C serves as a soil and waste pipe. The run has been centered between the two terminals to reduce long horizontal connections to it. This practice is considered efficient and signifies good workmanship. The terminals or base fittings of the soil and waste pipe which the branch serves must be fittings of long radius, designed especially for this purpose.

The next connections to the main run serve the floor drains, D. These drains must be set at proper height to allow the water to drain into them. The trap of the floor drain should be placed not more than 2 feet under the finished floor so it may be cleaned readily in case of stoppage.

Branch F serves a soil pipe installation and is run in a direct line to the base of the soil pipe, as is branch E, which is a terminal for a waste.

Branch G is connected to the main run at right angles and accommodates a basement toiletroom consisting of four water closets, a battery of wash basins and two urinals. Fig. 59 illustrates how this underfloor work should be constructed. Care must be used in planning this toiletroom. The openings of each fixture must be measured accurately from tentative partitions or basement walls, for after the basement floor is completed not much can be done to change the underfloor work should it be incorrectly laid out.

The cleanouts H and J, Fig. 55, are now brought up to floor height and equipped with removable covers.
