How To Design And Install Plumbing

Connection of the house sewer consists of the removal of the disc and the insertion of a clay curve of 45 degrees. A cement joint made of equal parts of sand and cement mixed with water completes this type of sewer connection, Fig. 41.

Y connections in the public sewer generally are recorded by local administrative authority, and the plumber can obtain their location at the proper agency. Often, however, upon opening the street, the measurement indicated proves false and the Y's branch cannot be located. In this event a new connection must be made.

The best procedure in this case is the insertion of a new Y in the public sewer. This can be accomplished in two ways. The most practical method of inserting a Y is to remove three lengths of pipe from the sewer and then fit in a new Y. Although this is difficult and involves expense it is the most advisable procedure.

The other method of inserting a new Y is accomplished by removing one length of pipe from the sewer. The top portion of the bell must be removed from the permanent installation to permit insertion of the Y. The Y fitting is dealt with similarly, using care to remove the top portion of the bell above the flow line of the sewer. The Y can then be dropped into place and turned in the direction of the house sewer. The removed parts of the bell are now cemented in place with a substantial application of cement mortar, Fig. 42.

In some localities, a slant connection can be used to make a new connection into a vitrified clay sewer, see Fig. 19. In this case a hole must be cut into the side of the sewer and the slant fitted carefully against it.

The joint can be completed by banking a substantial amount of cement mortar around the connection, Fig. 43.

Installation of the House Sewer. After all permits have been paid to the proper agency, the house sewer installation can begin. There are a number of factors which must be determined before the actual work can be started, namely, the depth of the house drain outlet, the depth of the connection with the main in the street, and the grade of the house sewer.
