How To Design And Install Plumbing

The first floor toilet room wash basin can now be provided with hot water by screwing a piece of 1/2"" pipe, Q", 4' 1" long from end to center of a 1/2"" elbow into the 45° elbow previously provided in the main and then run to the riser with a piece of pipe, R", V long from end to center of a 1/2" elbow and fitted with a 1/2" stop and waste valve. The branch is completed with a short nipple and a 1/2" ground joint union.

Hot Water Storage Tank. The specifications call for a 40-gallon storage tank with a furnace coil and auxiliary gas heater as the heating medium. These connections must be fitted after the furnace has been placed. The top or flow opening of the furnace coil must be connected to the top opening of the storage tank and the bottom or return connection of the storage tank must be connected to the bottom of the furnace coil. The pipe fittings used for this connection are all 3/4" in diameter.

The gas heater must likewise be connected later. This is done by connecting the top or flow opening of the gas heater to a tee provided directly above the boiler union. The opening in the bottom of the tank is connected with the bottom opening of the gas heater and is provided with a sediment cock so the hot water system may be drained. The pipe and fittings used for this connection are also 3/4" in diameter. Storage tank connections of this variety were ex- plained in Chapter XXII.

Water Pipe Test. After the entire system has been completed it should be tested with water and any leaks which occur must be corrected. It is advisable to use pressure in excess of that of the city water supply system to assure the plumber that precision workmanship prevails.

Gas Piping. The gas pipe installation in a modern residence is simple to construct as compared to the water supply and drainage system. It consists of a run of 3/4" pipe to the kitchen stove with 1/2" branches to the gas heater and laundry stove. Unlike the water pipe it is usually strapped tightly to the underside of the first floor joist. Not much regard is applied to grade except that it would be considered poor workmanship if the pipe contained traps which would allow condensation to accumulate. Where a condition of this kind is unavoidable, a drain in the form of a plug must be provided.
