There are some disadvantages in this type of installation. The connection with the domestic water supply system is objectionable, because a cross-connection may occur if the fire department sees fit to take its supply of water from a river, sewer, or drainage ditch. Under these circumstances, the water from the department's pumping unit could be injected into the distribution system of the building and be conveyed into the water mains throughout a large area, possibly contaminating them. The installation should be carefully supervised by sanitary authorities and be installed by competent mechanics to avoid the possibility of water pollution.
