How To Build Modern Kitchen Cabinets
Rectangles representing the cabinets that are to be installed should be drawn on the plan. Each of the base units has a depth of 22", while the widths vary as shown in the chart. The corner base unit requires a space of 34". The wall cabinet units selected should be drawn on the same plan. These upper units have a depth of 14", while the upper corner unit will require a space 22" x 22". The scale used in laying out the plan of the kitchen must also be used when the cabinets are being laid out on this plan. With the great variety of sizes to choose from it will be possible to work up a set of cabinets that will fit almost any kitchen arrangement.
The cabinets are designed so that they can be made as individual units and installed as such, or several cabinets can be made in combination. If a combination of cabinets is to be arranged to form a large unit it is advisable to make up a large top of sufficient length to cover the two or more units placed side by side rather than to make up a separate top for each unit. Covering of the top with linoleum as well as applying the molding to the edge should be handled in the same manner. When individual units are placed side by side to form a large unit they should be fastened together with stove bolts or wood screws.
The hardware items such as the hinges, drawer pulls, door catches and latches that will be required are left to the choice of the builder. There are a number of modern styles that can be used.

THE SINK cabinet shown in the drawings may be made 28", 30", 32", 36" or 42" long depending on available space as well as the size of present or prospective sink. Flat-rim sinks of the type suitable for use in this cabinet are obtainable in a variety of sizes ranging from 16" x 24" to 20" x 30". These are of the single-basin type. Twin-basin sinks which many housekeepers find more satisfactory can be obtained in sizes measuring 21" x 32" and 20" x 34>4". The type and size sink to be housed will determine the cabinet size.
