End member L, Fig. 8, is band-sawed. Cleat U, which is located as shown in Fig. 5, is fastened to the inside face with 11/2" No. 8 flathead screws. Apron M is rabbeted along the upper edge as in Fig. 8, then fastened to L with eightpenny and to J with tenpennv finishing nails.

Back N has the lower rear corner notched as shown in Fig. 8, and it is secured to K and L with eightpenny nails. Bevel one edge of the seat cleat as in Fig. 5 and fasten it to the back member with 11/4" No. 8 flathead screws. The seat is then put in place and fastened with sixpenny finishing nails.

Nailing strip R is secured to the wall with tenpenny nails, the bench placed in position and the cap fastened to the nailing strip, seat back, upright and end member with sixpenny finishing nails. Several 21/2" No. 10 flathead screws driven through L into the wall studs will secure the end members.

If the benches are not to back on a wall, provide a single i'/i" square leg under arm member J, fastening it with 21/2" No. 10 flathead screws.

HERE IS a home improvement that will increase the utility of small areas either in the breakfast room or den. The built-in corner seats shown in the photograph were installed in the area formerly used as a kitchenette. When the kitchen was moved to an addition, the water and waste pipes for the sink were left exposed in the dinette. To cover these pipes and to provide maximum seating capacity, the corner seats were installed. Duplication of such an installation is well within the ability of the home craftsman.

The main framework members are marked with a key letter in Fig. 1. The length of the various horizontal members will depend on the area covered by the seats. Fig. 1 shows the distance from the corner to one end as (X) while the distance from the corner to the other end is marked (Y). These distances must be measured on walls and should be noted on the sketch in Fig. 1. Using these measurements, complete the bill of material.
