How To Build Modern Kitchen Cabinets

The final coat may be a flat, semigloss or full-gloss enamel, depending on personal choice.

If the cabinet is to be joined to other existing cabinets, the metal edging as listed in the bill of materials will be sufficient. If the cabinet is to be independent of others, then two additional pieces of edging 24" long and two 61" in length will be needed. The edging is applied to the top U and back member V as shown in Fig. 11 and the linoleum is cemented in place. The cove is applied last.

Built-In Breakfast Nook

FOR SERVING a quick breakfast or a late evening snack, a breakfast nook is ideally suited. It also gives the touch of welcome and friendliness to the otherwise severe and formal lines of a modern kitchen. A table and benches to accommodate four persons.comfortably can be built into almost any average size kitchen because the space required is only six feet wide and four feet deep.

As the various table members listed in the bill of materials are cut to size, mark each with its key letter. Start construction with the frame shown in Fig. 1. End rails A and B join the side rails C by means of slip joints, so cut grooves 1/2" wide and 21/4" deep in each end of the side rails C. The regular rip saw blade may be used on the bench saw if several cuts are made to obtain the 1/2" width.

Tongues are cut on both ends of the end rails A and R to fit the grooves in the side rails. A notch 11/8" deep and 81/2" long is centered in front rail A on the inner edge to take the upper end of the leg. A bench saw will make the shoulder cuts while the band saw will cut along the line establishing the depth.

Assemble the frame members to check the fit; then take them apart, apply glue to all butting surfaces, and reassemble and clamp them. Be sure to check the work for squareness.
