Cleats S and R are cut from 3" square stock and secured to the upper front rail and side members as shown in Fig. 2, using glue and 11/4" No. 7 flat head wood screws. These cleats are used to secure the top U to the cabinet.
The ventilating grill N is made of metal similar to that which is used for radiator enclosures. A piece 21/4" x 121/2" will be required. As shown in Fig. 10, a 1" x 3/8" cleat K is secured to the rails and stiles with 11/4" brads. The grill is set in place, then the 3" quarter-round is cut to fit with back rail L into the underside of the top. It will be necessary to bore and countersink 5/32 holes in the cleats and rail to take these screws that hold the top.
The door DM is a panel 2" x 131" x 261" with a 3" x 3/8" rabbet cut along the ends and edges on the inside face. The outer face of the door should have the edges and ends molded with a quarter-round cutter. The door should be hung with either semi concealed or visible cabinet hinges. In eitem case, the hinge should be for a 8" offset. The door pull should be placed near the upper end of the door. The friction door catch is applied to the upper end of the door and the lower edge of the intermediate rail G. When finishing the cabinet, all hardware should be removed.
The sliding tray shown in Figs. 6 and 7 has the various members cut to the sizes given in the bill of materials. Each side member has a 3/8" x 11/2" groove cut along the outer face, 11/4" from the lower edge. The groove and its location are identical on all side members. The front and back members are joined to these side members wIt rabbet and dado joints. Dadoes 1/4" wide and 3/8"deep are located and cut on the inside face of the side members as shown in Fig. 7. The back and front members have to produce a 1" x 1" tongue. The upper edge of each front member is beveled at an angle of 45° and the upper corner of each side member is cut to the same angle at the front to conform wIt the slant of the front members.
The tray members are assembled, using glue on each joint; then the work is checked for squareness. The tray bottoms are metal grill measuring 123/8" x 20", fastened It 5/8" No. 4 round head screws as shown in Fig. 9.
Finishing of the cabinet consists of applying a coat of shellac, sanding it down with No. 4/0 sandpaper when dry, then applying the first coat of paint.
