Drawer-Type Cabinet Stores Linen
Modern Kitchen Cabinet No. 4 is a Luxury Housewives Will Welcome for the Storage of Dish Towels, Luncheon Cloths and a Variety of Culinary Gadgets
WHERE space will permit the installation of an extra floor unit, after sink cabinet and cupboard cabinets have been included in the kitchen scheme, the most welcome luxury is an all-drawer cabinet for the storage of kitchen essentials—everything from linens to culinary gadgets.
The four-drawer cabinet included in this series can be built in widths of 18", 20" or 24", the choice being dependent upon available space. Regardless of the width of cabinet decided upon, construction details are alike. The working drawing shown in Fig. 2 is based on a cabinet 24" wide and the horizontal dimensions shown in the front elevation and the plan are applicable to this size of cabinet only. All other dimensions can be followed for any of the three sizes. The bill of materials gives the sizes of each member.
Construction of the unit is started by cutting the various members to the sizes given in the bill of materials. Each member should be marked with a key letter for future identification. If plywood is not obtained for the two side panels (A) and the top (U) it will be necessary to make these wide panels by gluing up solid stock. To allow for squaring, the panels should be made at least 1" longer and wider than specified.
After all members have been cut to size, assembly can be started. The side members (A) have gains cut on the inside face at the back edge to take the runner supports as shown in Fig. 4. Each of these gains is 3/8" deep. The one for the top rail is 11/2" wide and 3/4" long; the others are 3/4" wide and 11/2" long. The location of each gain is shown in Fig. 4 and in section B-B of Fig. 2. The gains can be cut with a back saw and chisel.
The bottom rail (B) is to be set in a groove cut on the inside face of the side member (A) as shown in Fig. 4. This groove is 3/8" wide, 3/8" deep and 33/4" long and is located 11/8" from the front edge at the lower end of the side member. The corner in front of the groove is notched to allow for toe space at the front of the cabinet This notch is 3/4" wide and measures 3" long as indicated in Fig. 4.
