How To Build Modern Kitchen Cabinets

A 3/8" dowel is inserted in the step to act as a stop. The cabinet shelf to which the step is attached must be securely fastened in the cupboard and be well supported. If the shelf supports are weak, cleats made of 3/4" x 1" stock can be fastened to the cupboard sides to reinforce the cabinet shelf.

Kitchen Corner Cabinets Make Good Use Of Idle Space

A BOUT the only type of kitchen that calls for a corner cabinet is one that permits installation of cabinets along adjacent walls. This type of layout presents special problems. For appearance, if for nothing else, this space should be filled. If it is not occupied by cabinets, as much as 12 cubic feet of space is lost at the base and about 4 cubic feet along the wall. By using a cabinet designed for corner installation, the greater part of this space can be put to use.

Cabinet No. 9 for wall installation and the No. 6 floor unit presented here have been planned to fit in with the other wall and base units of this series. With the exception of a small triangular space at the back of the wall unit, the entire area taken up by the cabinet provides usable storage space. The lower corner unit loses a little more space. If the cabinet area were carried back to its full depth it would be extremely difficult to reach anything placed at the back. The plans, or top views, of these cabinets included in Figs 3 and 6 show the areas lost in the cabinets.

As both cabinets are to fit into corners and are to join up with other units which stand at right angles to the wall, a considerable amount of the cutting will have to be done at an angle of 45 degrees. This work should present no difficulty as long as a bench saw with tilting arbor or table is part of the shop equipment.

While both the floor and wall corner units of the series are presented together in this article, it is advisable to undertake their construction as separate units so as to avoid confusion of the various pieces.
