How To Build Modern Kitchen Cabinets

Racks on Underside of Shelf Hold Stemware

books

DELICATE stemware will not with stand the handling accorded regular glassware and dishes. When stemware is placed on shelves in the china closet where one glass comes in contact with another, stems are frequently broken and rims are easily chipped. A great deal of this unnecessary breakage can be avoided by constructing stemware racks and installing them on the underside of the closet shelves.

A simplified rack for this purpose consists of nothing but a light wood panel with slots cut at established points along the front edge. This panel is suspended from the regular china closet shelf with cleats. Glasses and goblets having flat bases and narrow stems are held upside down in the rack.

A piece of 1/8" or 3/16" plywood, measuring as wide and as long as the shelf, is used for the rack. Slots 3/8" wide to hold the glasses are located and cut in the plywood as shown in the drawing. The location of each of these slots must be determined from the glasses that are to be stored. To determine the various locations, the following procedure is suggested. Measure the diameter of the base as well as the rim of the glass to determine which part is larger. The larger of the two dimensions is the one that should be used for the location of the spacers as indicated by (A) in the drawing. After the locations of these spacers have been established, a series of center lines are drawn across the stock to establish the center of the 3/8" slots. The depth of the slots can be located by establishing the end the same distance from the back as the center of the groove is from either spacer.
