How To Build Modern Kitchen Cabinets

These moldings are shown in Details 8 and 10 of the sink cabinet unit.

Spring & Chain Control Cabinet Doors

A SMALL extension spring fastened to the inner side of each door on wall type kitchen cabinets will make them self-closing and thus prevent anyone from accidentally striking his head against the open door.

Fig. 1 shows how a small, light-tension spring may be mounted for this purpose. To prevent the door from being noisy when it shuts, a small rubber-headed tack may be driven into the inner face of the door where it will strike the edge of the shelf. If the cabinet has no shelf a small piece of thin rubber, such as a section of rubber band, may be tacked to the inner edge of the door overlap.

A short length of small chain attached to two screw eyes, as shown in Fig. 2, makes a good stop to prevent the door from opening too far and damaging the paint on an adjacent door.

Convenient Storage Pockets Easily Added Inside Kitchen Cabinet Door

WITH the great number of small items and open packages that are in constant use in the kitchen, the housewife is often at a loss to find suitable storage space. Kitchen cabinets seldom provide enough space, but the problem can be solved by the construction of wooden pockets which are fastened to the inner surface of the cabinet doors.

The size of these pockets depends on available space. The length of the pocket will be determined by the size of the door, while the height will, in most cases, be governed by the location of the cabinet shelf. The depth of each pocket will be controlled by the material to be stored.

The drawings show two types of pockets, one which has no partitions in it and can be used for holding such things as a box of soap powder or scouring powder, and the other which has partitions to hold small kitchen accessories. Thin stock such as 1/4" or 3/8" plywood can be used for the front, back, bottom and partition members, but heavier stock, preferably 1/2" material, should be used for the end members as they support the entire unit.
