You have heard about training your dog buy using a clicker. The dog learns that responding to the clicker equals some sort of reward. Conditioned training…sounds easy; how do you start?

Dog clickers are hand-held plastic tools containing a metal strip that ‘clicks’ when bent as you squeeze it. You can order one online or pick it up at your local pet store. The reason clickers have proven successful is the consistent sound they make; dogs respond well to the sharp noise.

Some people simply making a sound themselves. Others use a single word as a substitute for the clicker. That works, but what if the dog only responds to YOUR voice? What if more than one person is doing the training? Plus, you can’t talk or chew during training. Your call on this.

About the rewards: they need to be considered fabulous by your pup; set aside special treats for your training sessions. It should be something you only give at this time, and you know your doggy will work to get.

For the rare dog who isn’t wowed out by food, give them a few minutes of their favorite game of fetch or tug of war. Some dogs are happy enough for your undivided attention and will respond to exttra petting.

It’s best to use a leash and collar so you can keep your dog close with minimal distractions. Begin training a few minutes a day, gradually increasing the time you spend training with your dog.

Choose a time when you pet is not so hungry he or she is anxious, has had water and a nap. If you voice enthusiasm picking up the clicker and/or leash your dog will begin to look forward to training with you. When treated well they are born to please.

Like people, different dogs have different skill levels, and puppies may require a bit more patience (you may be getting your pup used to the leash at the same time!). Persistence, patience and consistency are what’s needed to carry out successful dog clicker training.
