Garden Planters: Bring the garden indoors, or explore container gardening on your patio

It’s very possible to assume that the garden planter is only effective in softening the sharp lines and man made materials of the contemporary home.  It is true that the garden planter works very well in this area.  The plants add a touch of the organic and properly used can alter your contemporary home to any mood or atmosphere.

However the garden planter can certainly be used in any home to add that decorative organic touch.  Is there an area of your home that needs an easy curve?  Trying putting in a container plant with wide broad leaves.  There are any number of plants and planters that can be used in any style of home. 

Homes will often have natural niches that are just perfect for the garden planter.  They can fit against that glass wall, the picture window or that wide recessed bay window.  It usually doesn’t take much space to create the feeling of a deeper woodsy place.  Usually all that’s needed is a few containers of well chosen plants. Remember that to create the right mood you need to carefully choose your plants.

One can easily create a mood of elegance with a glass container of Orchids on the half wall separating the living room and the dining room.  A long low planter of Hawaiian ferns can bring the tropics to your home, even if it’s a large rambling Victorian.

You can also add garden planters at any point in the life of your home.  If you are building and happen to think of it you can have the builders create some built in planters.  Though there isn’t a need to remodel your preexisting home if you want to bring in more plants.  Planters can be made to fit existing areas of the home and they have the added benefit of being portable should you decide to move.  Planters are also popular with apartment and house renters for this specific reason, after all one shouldn’t be kept from enjoying their love of plants simply because they rent their home. These planters can also be moved to hide defects in the architecture. 

As homes get older they settle and sometimes small cracks can develop in the walls.  One can spend an inordinate amount of time spackling and respackling these cracks but until the home is done settling those cracks are just going to keep coming back.  A well placed series of planters can hide such defects from your sight and that of your visitors.

The container garden may sound like a lot of work but in the long run it turns out to be easier to manage than an outdoor garden.  It’s not difficult to control the environment of the planter garden as it typically consists of several planters that are small in space and carry a minimum of dirt.  If you need to you can move the portable planters to someplace where it’s easier to do gardening work, such as transplanting, pruning and watering and bring the planter back to its normal resting place.
