Furniture Finishing

books

Any decorating may be done on the lacquer sealer, or if on mahogany, on the shellac coat. Where framework is of gum or birch it is not necessary to fill except as desired to make it harmonize with the veneer color. (See Book III, Matched Veneers, Shading and High-lighting, Two-toning.)

GRADE B

On Grade B work it is manifestly undesirable to use a water stain in view of the sanding expense thus incurred, and nongrain-raising stains are relatively high in material cost for a really low priced finish. Thus only oil stains remain, but while safe enough under varnish, cannot at least in the mahogany shades be considered entirely stable under lacquer, due to the bleeding action of the lacquer solvents on the red aniline component of the stain. Lacquer over mahogany non-grain-raising stains and over most walnut oil stains causes no trouble, where the latter are not applied too heavily and are allowed to dry through.

COMBINATION WALNUT OR MAHOGANY

System 1.—Spray, dip or brush walnut oil or mahogany nongrain-raising stain directly on the wood, wiping off even with rags if dipped; fill all gum, birch, poplar, as well as the walnut or mahogany veneer with paste wood filler to even color and let dry twenty-four hours; apply lacquer sealer all over and sand; spray on one coat clear body lacquer; spray on second coat of flat lacquer.

GUM, BIRCH OR POPLAR

System 2.—Spray, dip or brush on one coat of combination filler-stain of walnut shade, purchased from a reliable manufacturer for use under lacquer; smooth off with excelsior when dry and spray on a coat of lacquer sealer; sand when dry and spray on one coat of flat lacquer. This system is best adapted for a walnut color and is very speedy.

MAHOGANY VENEER

System 3.—Spray on the desired shade mahogany non-grainraising stain; let dry hard, fill any veneer and spray on a 2 lb.-cut of pure shellac; let dry and finish with one or two coats of clear body lacquer, the last rubbed dull. This- system is extra clear in tone.
