Fences

This cast iron gate is of rose and lily pattern and was to be seen in the town of Bolton, in Peel County, Ontario, where it was cast. It was a fine example of this rapidly vanishing type of work.

THIS lovely stone gate post and cap and stone wall were at the cemetery in Whitechurch in Peel County, Ontario. The neighbourhood was well known for its carefully constructed dry stone fences, and doubtless this excellent example of craftsmanship was undertaken away back in the nineteenth century by the selfsame Scotch immigrant mason.

AN INTERESTING collection of early homemade Canadiana in the form of a mill stone, stone gate post, pole fence, and pole gate, found at Millburn's Allandale Mills, in County Peel. They were rugged, yet forthright, and the pole gate was a thing of real beauty.

THESE impressive field stone gateposts were assembled and built by Robert G. Logan on his farm near Mount Wolfe, Lot 23, Concession 9, Albion Township, in Peel. Somehow the wire gate seems disappointing by comparison. Doubtless the original gates were of wood, and perhaps more picturesque.

The lower drawing is of a well-finished wooden gate in Western Canada, on some ranch and horse corral. Note the cross-bracing and the long, sturdy strap hinges. The latch, of wood, is of the type that even a wily bronco could not open.
