SOMETIMES this odd-looking fence is seen in the more barren Ontario farming country to the north, where rock outcroppings lie just below the surface or break clean through it, such as the approach to the Georgian Bay area. The post may not enter the ground at all and is supported, as shown, by the clever rock and wood device worked out by our forebears long ago. The upright and diagonal stakes are nailed to the post, and are wedged and supported by the carefully placed boulders.

A MODERN kind of barrier known as a seven-strand wire fence, topped off with barbed wire. There are, as you will note, seven horizontal strands of wire, wider apart as they leave the ground, hence its name of seven-strand. To be really effective the wire should be stretched and held tautly between posts. The barbed wire discourages hunters as well as animals and the best way to get over it is to go around it.

The lower drawing shows a similar style of fence to the upper but it uses growing trees as opposed to posts. It, of course, presupposes that the trees are evenly spaced, in a straight line, and more or less uniform in size and shape.

Barbed wire now comes in various wire thickness and weight, and strand fences may be purchased in varying height, and numbers of strands.
