The term environmental art refers to art which uses the natural as its focus or as its medium. It can also refer to art which makes a statement related to environmental issues. In many cases, there is an overlap between the two. The 1960′s and 70′s were a time of great social upheaval and rebellion against the status quo. There were several movements which decried traditional art as out of touch and “unnatural”. This was very tied into the “back to nature” movement. Free form sculptures and abstract art were seen as more expressive, unrestrained and natural.
