Wool

The chief characteristics of wool are:

1. Slightly affected by hot hydrochloric solution.
2. Dissolves in boiling lye solution.
3. Curls and swells when burnt with a match giving off odor.
4. Fibers cling to one another when twist has been taken out.
5. Ends curl when broken.

6. Glances off when thread is plunged end on into water.
7. Easy to break.
8. When combed on the end with the point of a penknife fibers separate with a little fuzz.

Linen

The chief characteristics of linen are:
1. Dissolves slowly in hot hydrochloric acid solution.

2. Slightly affected by boiling lye solution.
3. Ends even and compact when burnt with a
match.
4. Fibers easy to separate when twist has been
taken out.
5. Ends do not curl when broken.
6. Does not glance off when thread is plunged end on into water.
7. Hard to break.
8. When combed on the cud with the point of
a penknife, libers separate with a little fuzz.

Cotton

The chief characteristics of cotton are:
1. Dissolves more quickly than linen in hot hydrochloric acid solution.
2. Is slightly affected by boiling lye solution.
3. Ends even and compact when burnt with a
match.
4. Fibers easy to separate when twist has been taken out.
5. Ends curl when broken.
6. Glances off when thread is plunged end on into water.
7. Easy to break.
8. When combed on the end with the point of a penknife, fibers become very fuzzy.

Jute

7. Fairly hard to break.
