Carpets And Rugs

The number of loops per inch width of carpet is denoted as the "pitch". Usually the pitch is given as the total number of loops in a standard width of 27 inches.

A loop of pile is often denoted as a "point" and the number of points per square inch is equal to the number of wires times the pitch (per in.).

Shots

In the formation of a loop of pile the weft thread is shot across the carpet a certain number of times. If it is shot across twice for every loop, the carpet is called a "two shot", if three times a "three shot", etc. Figure 25, Plate; 1, shows a two-shot, three-frame Brussels carpet with two fillers or stuffers. Most Brussels carpets are two-shot weaves.

Special Shapes

The Jacquard mechanism has recently been used for producing carpets of special shapes. It follows as a matter of course that the Jacquard mechanism can pick up threads according to a figure design, in exactly the same way as it picks them up in accordance with a color design. For instance, it is possible to make a carpet by means of a Jacquard attachment that will have an oval shape or any irregular shape. Naturally, the body of the carpet will be rectangular, but the pile can be any shape desired, and when finished, the body can be cut to conform to the design on the face and the edges bound under to prevent unraveling.

Quality

Aside from the materials employed, the quality of a Brussels carpet is determined by the number of frames which correspond to the amount of wool used in the pile, and usually also corresponds to the number of colors used in the pattern.
