The Golden State: Where & How to Live, Secure, Visit, Enjoy and Thrive in California

Carpet Laying And Estimating Website

Primitive designs, such as those found in American Indian rugs, may express strength combined with simplicity and directness. Modern and Provincial carpets use straight lines, too. including geometric patterns, herringbone stripes, rectangles. Similarly, feelings of gracefulness and rhythm are expressed by curved lines. These may be either representational, as in floral designs, or abstract, as in modern "impressionist" motifs. The judicious combination of color and pattern may also give a room a "masculine" or "feminine" character— as for example, in the decor of a den or study, as contrasted with that of a boudoir or sitting room.

Carpet Creates a Central Living Area. Due to its ability to "pull together" the various elements of a room through the media of color and design, carpeting from wall to wall can combine several otherwise unrelated rooms into one composite living area, thus making a "home" out of a "house." Blending the floor and wall areas with wall-to-wall carpet integrates all of the design elements and furnishings of a house and gives a finished, completed appearance to rooms even though they may be practically bare of furniture.

THE FUNCTIONAL VALUES OF CARPET

The functional values of carpet are those related to the health, comfort and happiness of the family. As is true of the decorative values, there is present also a strong element of the psychological—i.e., the effect upon our mental, emotional or spiritual make-up. Functional benefits that carpet brings to a home are quiet, warmth, comfort, safety, and easier care or maintenance.

Carpet Reduces Noise. We live in a noisy world of harsh street sounds, pounding of heels on bare floors and stairs, clattering of dishes, shrieks of children at play. All these sounds, passing from room to room and reverberating from floors, walls and ceilings, are especially disturbing in the home, which should be for us a haven of peace and quiet. Carpet eliminates impact noises (footsteps, moving of furniture, etc.) and absorbs a high percentage of airborne noises (voices, radioTV-phonograph sets, traffic sounds, etc.). Thus carpet makes the home more peaceful and restful, saving wear and tear on parents' nerves, increasing the "privacy" of rooms and homes. Carpet makes bedrooms quieter for greater rest, makes concentration easier for children doing homework, and cuts down sound from overhead rooms in apartment houses or two-family homes.

Carpet Gives Warmth. Cold air, being heavier than warm, settles near the floor. Not only does a bare floor feel cold to the touch; it is also drafty. Protective insulation against cold is therefore needed at this point to keep a room comfortable. The greatest known insulator against cold is still air enclosed in a multitude of tiny pockets, as in the pile of carpet. Carpet keeps rooms warm and cozy in any weather, helps prevent colds due to drafts and chills, helps reduce fuel bills, and makes temperature control easier.
