After sewing and latexing the seam, turn the carpet face up and straighten any curled yarn. Then trim off the high tufts to get a smooth, even finish.
Installing Around Pipes. When installing Chenille around pipes, pillars, or similar obstacles, use the following method for cutting Chenille with the weave: Draw a straight line on the carpet back between the filling shots with a heavy pencil. Then catch 3 or 4 rows of fur on either side of the desired cutting line by sewing through the back of the carpet to the face.
When pre-sewing, be careful not to overlap the stitch where carpet has to cut. Then cut the carpet, avoiding severing the stitches. This will give a good, secure edge that can be rejoined by sewing or fastened to the floor with small-headed nails. When cutting against the weave, it is necessary to rubberize the edges only.
REPAIRING SMALL DAMAGED AREAS IN CHENILLE
One type of small damaged area might be in the form of cigarette burns. In such cases, follow the steps outlined below.First, remove the damaged tufts with a pair of tweezers, being careful not to break the fur threads in the process.
Then obtain a small strip of fur from the waste left over from the installation, or from the customer if she has saved any from the original installation. (If none is available, you might "borrow" a piece from beneath the quarter-round, or from some other location that is usually covered.)
Next, apply latex to the exposed backing in the damaged area. Now with the tweezers insert enough of the fur to cover the damaged area. Allow time for the latex to set, and use the tweezers to straighten up any bent tufts. Then trim off the tufts with the scissors, even with the rest of the pile.
CARE IN USING THE STRETCHER WITH CHENILLE
Always adjust the teeth of the knee kicker or power stretcher to the proper length for Chenille—which is just long enough to penetrate through to the heavy Chenille back.
Chenille carpet generally has higher pile than other weaves, so that unless you adjust the teeth to be long enough to go through and get hold of the heavy backing, you may damage either the catcher warps or the fur threads themselves.
