By pulling out this one row of Chenille fur, the backing will be exposed in a groove across the width. Using the knife, cut through the backing along this groove (Fig. 10.4). Take the cut end and pull out the 2 extra inches of fur, which will release and expose the catcher warps. Divide these catcher warps into groups of three and tie them together securely, using square knots, across the entire width.
Hemming Widthwise. When Chenille is to be cut and the end re hemmed, cut it 2 in. longer than the measurement indicates and pull out the fur to release the catcher warps, as described on page 161. Then divide the catcher threads into groups of three—but instead of tying them on the face side, use a crochet hook and pull the groups through to the back, as shown in Fig. 10.5. When the groups have all been pulled through to the back, tie them together with square knots in the usual manner. Fold the excess backing along the last row of fur and sew it to the back of the carpet, using a loop stitch (Fig. 10.6).
Binding Widthwise. The first step in binding widthwise is to lay the tape on the face of the carpet along the edge of the backing. Then sew from the back, catching about 1/2 in. of backing and 1/8 in. of tape, as shown in Fig. 10.7. Then fold and sew the loose edge of the tape to the back of the carpet, using a regular loop stitch. When this is completed you will have a neat and securely bound end with no danger of the fur coming loose.
