Carpet Laying And Estimating Website

Step 5. Refer to Fig. 9.36. From center line along the nose line set off the radius R only. Mark this point A. Likewise, from center line on floor line, mark off a distance equal to radius R minus measurement F. Call this point B.

Step 6. Snap a chalk line through points A and B. Continue this chalk line off the carpet until it intersects center line at G, and mark this intersection with that letter.

Step 7. Anchor tape line with awl at G, as shown in Fig. 9.37. Measure to point A and with the chalk mark out the arc of the nose line as indicated at B. Likewise, with your tape line anchored at G, measure to point C. With your chalk, mark out the arc of the floor line as shown.

Step 8. Measure the circumference of the tread circle from point A around to B-1. Lay out this distance from A on the arc of the nose line as indicated at point B. Mark point B. Chalk mark the line B to G. When the cap is sewed, point B will meet point B-l.

Installation Preliminaries. Trim net the circular portion of the tread (Fig. 9.38) and along the nose line as indicated. The remainder of the carpet is trimmed 2 in. over net as shown by the wavy lines. If you prefer to make your layout on the warp side of the carpet, reverse the position of the layouts given in Fig. 9.38. With the Wiss Shears (No. 908), cut halfway through Smoothedge Gripper to make it pliable so that it can conform to the circular contour of the riser.

Next, anchor the Smoothedge Gripper to riser up from the floor, leaving a gully equal to the thickness of the carpet. Be sure that the Smoothedge pins point toward the floor. At A and B (Fig. 9.39), anchor Smoothedge Gripper away from the wall less than the thickness of the carpet. At C, leave approximately i in. gully—with Smoothedge pins pointing toward the crotch.

Fig. 9.40 shows the Smoothedge Gripper and padding installed on the steps. Note the position of the Smoothedge. Arrows indicate the direction that the pins should point. At A leave a gully equal to less than the thickness of the carpet; at B, anchor the Smoothedge out on the tread and up on the riser | in. for carpet of average thickness. Reduce or increase this spacing for thinner or thicker carpet.

The diagramming procedure is shown in actual operation in Fig. 9.41. Note the amount of floor space required, and how the center line has been extended.
