NOVOPLY

Novoply is a dimensionally stable and practically warp-free panel made of wood chips faced with pine or redwood veneer flakes. For interior use. Novoply doors are available complete with hardware. Screws should not be inserted in edges.

SIZES. Thicknesses of 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" and 1". Redwood in 3/8" and 3/4" only. Widths and lengths—all thicknesses available in 48" x 96". Pine Novoply in 3/4" thickness can be had in the additional widths of 30" and 36", and in 60", 72", 84" lengths.

PLYWOOD

WOODS.Fir is the most common and very suitable for structural purposes and where grain is not a factor. Fir is also available in decorative effects, striated, weathered and textured. Fine wood face veneers including ash, birch, cedar, cherry, elm, mahogany, maple, oak, redwood and walnut. Exterior plywood, which is highly moisture resistant, is usually available in fir, redwood and mahogany.

PLIES. Usually 1/4 " and 3/8" thick are 3-ply; 1/2 " and 5/8" are usually 5-ply, and 3/4" comes in both 5- and 7-ply. The 3/4" thickness in fine face veneers is often available in "lumber core" which is still 5-ply but with the center ply of poplar about 5/8" thick. Veneer core has more resiliency and strength, but lumber core has almost the same dimensional stability and is used where doweled, splined or dovetailed joints are called for, where edges are exposed, or where screws are to be inserted.

GRADES. Fine face-veneered panels are furnished good one side (G1S) and good two sides (G2S). In the first case the back veneer is often birch. Fir plywood always has fir for all plies. Grade A-A has both sides sanded, unmarred and perfectly smooth. Neatly made, carefully matched patches of limited size are permitted. This is used where both sides are exposed. For cabinetwork the face should always be A grade. The back need not be' where it does not show. A-B, A-C or A-D grades are suitable in this latter case.

SIZES. Thicknesses of 1/4" , 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4" are most commonly available. Widths of 24", 36"and 48" are most usual; 30" and 42" are sometimes available locally. Lengths are 48", 60", 72", 84" and 96".

HARDBOARD

Hardboard is a dense panel made by bonding refined wood fibers together with lignin. It has a hard, grainless surface equally strong in both directions. Can be bent to some extent. Can be fastened with nails, screws or adhesives, but will not provide a base for nails or screws. Takes most finishes. Very slight expansion and contraction.

GRADES. Available in standard and tempered grades. Tempered is impregnated with a special compound which increases strength and decreases moisture absorption. Tempered may be used for exterior purposes and flooring, basement and bathroom walls.
