The Golden State: Where & How to Live, Secure, Visit, Enjoy and Thrive in California

The Practical Built In Funiture

In this unit the apron is flush with the cabinet ends, but there is no stile flanking the drawers. Instead, the drawer fronts also cover the front edges of the sides, as the bottom drawers do the base. Note that the bin is attached by a piano-hinge and swings back into closed position by its own weight. The whole unit is mounted on a 2x4 base set back 3 inches for toe room.

Dead Storage

Attic possibilities depend upon clear space dimensions and available floor space under the eaves. In most cases it pays to erect a wall 4 feet high and use the space behind it for dead storage. The rest of the floor space will then have a practical clearance overhead. Fig. 110 shows how this is done. Given sufficient ceiling height, the possibilities for useful built-ins are endless.

Bedroom with Cabineting and Box-Type Beds
Shown in Fig. Ill is a typical attic fitted up as a bedroom for two. The single, box-type beds are on casters so they can be slid under the eaves out of the way when not in use.

When architectural considerations permit (you have to think of the outside of the house as well as the inside), a large window is installed in the gable end. Under it, in the illustration, a desk has been built, flanked by storage cupboards.

The tops of the cupboards can be fitted with pads and used as sofas. Otherwise the tops can be hinged on, and chests can be substituted for the cupboards.

If the rafters are open, it is usually a simple matter to nail 6-inch t & g boards directly to them, and to the tie beams to make a ceiling.
