Practical Electricity And House Wiring

Those to outlet No. 17 are tapped on to the black and white wires at any convenient point, since the Code does not require that joints and splices must be inside outlet boxes as in cable wiring).1

The two wires for the receptacle of outlet No. 16 may be tapped on to the two wires which run from point No. 1 through outlet No. 16 to outlet No. 15 as shown in Fig. 184, or the circuit wires may be looped, insulation removed at the end of the loop, and the bared wire connected to the terminal of the receptacle, as shown in Fig. 185. This method requires less labor and less soldering.

At outlet No. 17 the wires terminate at the receptacle and do not run onward to another outlet; consequently the wiring is very simple, as shown in Fig. 186. In wiring receptacles, it quite frequently happens that an additional receptacle is to be installed on the other side of the wall, directly opposite the first receptacle. In that case the wiring is very simple as shown in Fig. 187 (one wire only is shown).

Other Outlets.—It should not be necessary to show each outlet in detail. It is necessary only to run wires as they would run inside cable or conduit, but supported instead on porcelain insulators properly spaced and as already discussed. Remember that wires to switches and between switches are always black (or red) but never white, as is permissible by Code exception when using cable.

Testing.—Proceed exactly as when using non-metallic sheathed cable for wiring.
