Plumbing Repairs And Utilities

3. Data on Existing Installations

The plumbing crew must have access to plans and charts showing the actual installation of all piping in the various buildings. These drawings must in clude location of shut-off valves to permit proper operation in emergency. All changes made in the systems must be shown on the plans. New drawings need not be prepared. Post engineers can get all available drawings, notes, and other data from the district engineers, area engineers, and other sources; suitably amended construction drawings can be used for record drawings.

Drainage And Vent Systems

4. General

This section describes plumbing drainage and vent systems within buildings and to a point 5 feet outside buildings. A drainage system consists of all piping which carries waste water, sewage, or other drainage from the building to the street sewer or place of disposal. For information on sanitary sewers outside buildings, see TM 5-665.

5. Installation Standards

Safe standards for installations in drainage and vent systems are outlined briefly below. Follow these standards as closely as practicable for alterations or dditions to existing systems For more specific information on installation standards, see publications listed in appendix I. The minimum requirements in National Bureau of Standards Report BMS 66 (app. I) are a guide to proper installation of drain and vent piping.

a. Use cast-iron hub-and-spigot pipe and fittings with lead-calked joints, or screwed pipe with recessed drainage fittings, for drainage and vent piping within buildings. Cast-iron or malleable-iron fittings can be used with screwed pipe in vent systems.

b. Make all joints and connections permanently gastight and watertight. Secure cast-iron pipe with lead joints at least 1 inch deep. If threaded pipe is used, remove all burrs and cuttings, and apply lubricant to male thread only. Paint exposed threads onscrewed pipe with acid-resisting paint.

c. Install piping without unnecessary stresses or strains. Provide for expansion, contraction, and structural settlement.
