Plumbing Repairs And Utilities

Introduction

1. Scope

This manual prescribes materials and methods used to operate, maintain, and repair plumbing systems in Army buildings. Installation details covering alterations and additions to existing facilities are also discussed. Important references are listed in appendix I and tables of water-flow data in appendix II.

2. Personnel

a. QUALIFICATIONS. The post plumbing force normally consists of a plumbing foreman and an adequate number of plumbers and helpers with the following qualifications:

(1) The plumbing foreman must know sanitary regulations and practices and have the experience the plumbing trade normally requires for foremen.
(2) Plumbers must be familiar with sanitary regulations and practices and have experience in the plumbing trade.
(3) Plumbers' helpers should have experience as apprentices in the piping trades.

b. DUTIES. Plumbing personnel's duties are as follows:

(1) The plumbing foreman plans and directs the activities, delegates the duties, and plans the hours of labor for each man in his organization. Tie maintains and analyzes operating records, and plans ac- tive, continuous, and systematic inspections, adjustments, and repairs of all plumbing equipment and piping in accordance with improved preventive maintenance standards. He supervises all operations to assure compliance with safety and accident prevention measures prescribed in OCE publication entitled "Safety Requirements for Excavation, Building and Construction" (16 December 1941) and revisions. (See app. I.)

(2) Plumbers' duties depend on their individual abilities. At larger stations, several plumbers may serve as assistants to the foreman. The other plumbers and plumbers' helpers perform duties assigned them by the foreman. In addition, they should look for possible improvements to plumbing systems, such as alterations to remove dangerous connections, eliminate stoppages, and facilitate cleaning; methods of reducing water consumption and fuel cost where hot water or steam is used; and changes and additions to facilitate preventive maintenance. The foreman forwards all such suggestions to proper authority for action.
