Plumbing Heating And Piping

The first three of these categories are of most importance to the estimator for the average run of building heating systems. The third is of most importance to the estimator for the larger building projects and for industrial and chemical-process plants. These categories will be discussed separately:

1. The cast-iron sectional boiler used for low-pressure steam or hot-water heating systems in residences, small schools, and commercial establishments usually presents no problem to the estimator. Connections to the boiler will be taken into account in the piping section of the estimate. The erection, therefore, becomes one in which the following items should be considered:

a. Hauling and unloading costs
b. Moving the sections, jacket, trim, etc., to the erection location
c. Setting of the base and erection of the sections
d. Placing of the jacket if such is supplied
e. Connection of the boiler trim
f. Testing and placing in operation

2. The package boiler plant, the steam generator, or the automatic steam generator, however it may be advertised in the literature of the manufacturer, actually implies a complete unit ready to generate steam or produce hot water merely by attaching supply and return mains, fuel supply, and electric power. All that needs to be done beyond this is to open the valves, turn on the power, and off she goes. This statement is not intended to be witty. It is made in order to bring out the point that such a situation may ultimately exist only if the estimator selects the proper automatic steam generator including all the required auxiliaries. This is a point which must be considered very carefully by the estimator. It is quite possible, in the rush to complete a bid, to take for granted that the quoted price for a particular steam generator includes, for example, the condensate return system. This may or may not be true. A thorough check is necessary to ensure that the price placed in the estimate for this equipment does, in fact, cover all of the necessary items of equipment.

These boilers will be supplied with the necessary burners, blowers, and other equipment required to burn either oil, of the various weights, or gas, which may be natural or manufactured. Here again the proper selection of this equipment must be made by the estimator or at least checked by him to see that it has been included in the price.

The boiler trim, which includes the necessary water-level control equipment, steam-pressure gauge, safety valves, etc., will usually be assembled on the boiler when it is received.
