Hot Water Suply

books

38. In many cases, where it is required to determine the total hot-water demand for a given building, it is more expedient to calculate the requirements on the basis of the demand for each room in the building rather than for each fixture. When this method of calculation is followed, the values shown in Table V, which gives the hot-water demand per stipulated room unit arrived at from experience, will in all likelihood give a more accurate over-all estimate than when the calculations are based on the fixtures alone. The procedure for determining the capacity of the hot-water storage tank, after the total hourly heating requirements have been calculated, is the same as that explained in a preceding article.

Temperature Control

39.Types of Temperature Control.—The temperature of the hot water delivered by a heating device may be controlled automatically in many different ways. Coal-fired heaters may have the drafts to the combustion chamber opened or closed by a thermostat. Gas-burning heaters usually are controlled by thermostats which open or close the main gas valve, while a pilot burner runs continuously so as to insure ignition. Oil- burning heaters may have the operation of the atomizing device stopped by a thermostat in the departing water, using electric ignition or a small gas pilot burner to insure ignition.
