Hot Water Suply

books

As the sections of a sectional heating boiler are always connected together near the bottom of the boiler, it is unnecessary to make separate return connections to each section. If the house heating boiler b is of the round cast-iron type, or is of conventional steel type having free water circulation throughout, one flow connection from the boiler to the heater will serve, and the header c is unnecessary. Many sectional cast-iron steam boilers have free water circulation between the sections only at their bottoms, the upper connecting nipples between sections being above the water line; hence the necessity for a header c with its individual connections. Special circular saws capable of cutting cast iron are available for cutting the hples for the connecting pipes.

30. Referring to Fig. 15, the domestic water circulates from the hot-water storage tank f through the interior of the copper heat-transfer coil d, through pipes g and h, as indicated by the arrows. Hot water flows from the storage tank to the fixtures through the pipe i, and a circulating return j from the remote end of the hot-water flow main enters pipe g through a check-valve k. Cold water to replace the hot water drawn from the system enters the bottom of the storage tank at l. A drain valve should be provided as shown at m, and there should be no valves in the flow circuit between the heat-transfer device and the storage tank, to prevent accidental closing of all communication between these devices, in which case expansion of the confined water might cause a leak. As an added precaution there should be a pressure relief valve on the storage heater. A thermometer is mounted at n so that the hot-water temperature may be observed. There is no objection to the presence of a valve o in the circulating pipe between the boiler and the transfer heater; in fact, such a valve may be useful in case it is desired to open the heater, since, by closing this valve, very little of the boiler water can escape. An air vent p connected under the boiler safety valve q is desirable but not usually- necessary.
